At the grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, Our Lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. Pilgrims pray here especially for the sick, and with your candle you can join them.

In 1858, fourteen-year-old Bernadette Soubirous saw Our Lady eighteen times in the grotto of Massabielle. Mary introduced herself with the words "I am the Immaculate Conception" and called for prayer and conversion. The Church recognised the apparitions in 1862, and the spring Bernadette uncovered still flows today. In the evening pilgrims carry candles in procession, and on 11 February, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Church keeps the World Day of the Sick.
