About the shrine

In December 1531, Our Lady appeared on the hill of Tepeyac to Juan Diego, a poor native man, and asked for a church to be built there. As a sign for the bishop, her image remained on his cloak, and it is still kept in the basilica in Mexico City. Juan Diego was canonised in 2002, and Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron of the Americas. On her feast, 12 December, millions of pilgrims come to the basilica.
