Loreto

Our Lady of Loreto

Loreto keeps the Holy House, by tradition the home of the Holy Family in Nazareth. On its way to Italy, tradition says, it rested for three years at Trsat near Rijeka in Croatia.

About the shrine

The Basilica of the Holy House in Loreto, on Italy's Adriatic coast, was built around a humble stone house. Tradition says angels carried the house from Nazareth at the end of the 13th century, stopping on the way at Trsat, today one of the oldest Marian shrines in Croatia. Inside the house the statue of the Black Madonna of Loreto is honoured, and since 1920 Our Lady of Loreto has been the patron of aviators. Her feast is kept on 10 December.
