Our Lady of Einsiedeln

The Benedictine abbey of Einsiedeln in central Switzerland has drawn pilgrims for more than a thousand years. Today they pray before Our Lady in the Chapel of Grace.

About the shrine

The abbey was founded in 934 on the spot where the hermit Saint Meinrad had lived and prayed. In the great baroque church stands the Chapel of Grace with the statue of the Black Madonna, whose face and hands, tradition says, were darkened by candle smoke. Einsiedeln is an important stop on the Way of Saint James to Santiago de Compostela. Every day after Vespers the monks sing the Salve Regina in the Chapel of Grace.
