About the shrine

The icon of the Black Madonna has been kept in the Pauline monastery on Jasna Góra since the end of the 14th century. Tradition says Saint Luke painted it, and two scars on Mary's face recall a raid in the 15th century. In 1656 King John Casimir proclaimed Our Lady Queen of Poland. Every summer pilgrims walk for days to Jasna Góra, and the feast of the Black Madonna is kept on 26 August.
