The Chapel of Grace in Altötting at night

Altötting

Our Lady of Altötting

Altötting is called the heart of Bavaria. In the small Chapel of Grace, pilgrims have prayed before the Black Madonna for more than five centuries.

About the shrine

The core of the octagonal Chapel of Grace is more than a thousand years old, and the statue of the Black Madonna inside dates from around 1330. Pilgrimages began in 1489, and since then emperors, kings and popes have come here, among them John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The walls of the chapel are covered with votive pictures that pilgrims left in thanksgiving. The chapel also keeps urns with the hearts of Bavarian kings.
